CURRICULUM CHANGE

SNDT Women's University, Mumbai was the first of the CDI grantee colleges to undertake the task of designing courses that would enrich the understanding of our society. Three courses: Women in Changing India, History as Heritage and Current Concerns were introduced in the first two undergraduate years after faculty orientation and training. The success of the first two courses has been acknowledged after evaluation and there has been an interest in introducing them in other institutions in Mumbai.

Utkal University, Orissa has introduced a course on Diversity in the current academic year in selected colleges, and after evaluation it will be introduced in the other colleges of this large affiliating university. The Vice Chancellor, Prof. G. Das, has given his steady support and a multi-disciplinary faculty committee has discussed and approved its structure and content. This steering committee has also received, with great appreciation, the ERC training program for faculty. The faculty trained in our workshops has, in its turn, introduced the self-development and capacity building courses in their respective colleges.

Goa University is small and one of the newer universities in India, with 26 affiliated colleges. The Vice Chancellor, speaking at one of our student workshops held there recently, mentioned that the two CDI colleges in Goa are noticeably different and have demonstrated the impact of the Diversity Initiative on student attitudes and the campus climate - especially in faculty- student relations and in student union activities. At the Vice Chancellor's invitation, the ERC team of consultants conducted in mid January 2001 an orientation course for all the college Principals in the State, with a view to introducing curriculum change from the next academic year. It is hoped that subsequent to this program, the new curriculum will be introduced in a phased manner during the next academic year.

North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon, has also integrated a diversity component in the Foundation course mandated in the first undergraduate year.

As word has gone around about the CDI training program, ERC has had inquiries from several colleges and high schools on how they can become part of this network. It is hoped that the HRD book that is planned for publication in early 2001, will be available to any institution interested in using these training methods. Usually, only executives in corporate business and government enterprises have been participants in such HRD training. Innovations in Teachers Training that go beyond pedagogy and up dating of subject knowledge, are not only essential, but also well received.
