The enthusiasm that one finds on the campuses of the participating colleges must be sustained through planning of activities in which students and faculty have an equal role. Those colleges and universities that have demonstrated their success in transforming the campus climate could be centres for further training through reaching out to other institutions in the area. The Partnership college phase of CDI in the last two years did not allow enough time for the planned focus of student and teacher training and interaction. Our goal is to reach a million students, by the end of next year, through the classroom contact of trained and motivated faculty. Those teachers already trained have demonstrated their interest and ability to impact students in their classes. The willingness of this core group of trainers to give their time for further student activity must be supported by an on-going program on selected campuses.
It is also important that schools in the vicinity of the colleges be influenced, as the teen years are a stage at which education for self-development, for building citizenship and values is essential. Many of the colleges currently participating, have Plus- Two class students on their campus and these teenagers have benefited from the courses and activities, that sensitize them to the diversity, that is the strength of the nation.
We are all living in a period of immense change brought on by the impact of technology and the information revolution. Diversity in many dimensions confronts us and we have to choose how we will respond to it. Cross-cultural contacts, communication and sharing of our experiences should generate new ideas so that we see diversity not as a problem, but, rather as an exciting opportunity to bring about a transformation in our society, through education.
