FROM CHIEF EDITOR At the time of writing this Newsletter, we are reminded that this is the ninth anniversary of the new Educational Resources Centre - "new" because it is the re-birth of a dream and a mission revived after long years of hibernation. When the real world was torn by conflict and polarized ideologies, a college professor, who I admired greatly, reminded me that Ideals are also Real. Growing up in the aftermath of the world war, the trauma of partition, wars with neighbouring countries, and terrorism erupting like ulcers in our body politic, it was difficult but necessary for me to nurture ideals, values and the quest for understanding. As I see it, education for multicultural understanding remains the hope, the goal and the ideal to which ERC remains tethered.

This newsletter was planned and discussed with a group of friends two months ago. Little did we know when we finished the manuscript that we would be pushing everything aside to engage in endless discussion amidst the fog of gloom over the attack of September 11th. There are many theories about Why this happened, How it could have happened and When will it happen next. There is little doubt about the solution. In the words of Clement Attlee, "in the minds of men the defenses of peace must be constructed." Understanding the history, geography and underpinnings of faith, among different peoples is one facet of the solution. Developing the potential and giving a positive direction to the energies of young people, is another. Alleviating poverty and providing employment through appropriate education is yet another. Accepting the commonality of human goals for peaceful living is one more. The point is that our educational resources are like a diamond that shines when every facet reflects the aspirations of humankind for peace in a world where we can raise families and enjoy a productive life. There may be different ways of living and a variety of shades of culture but the diversity of Life in the world, and in our country, can only be strengthened when we recognize our common need.

ERC made a small beginning by studying Indian society through small projects. We spread our wings by reaching out to colleges across the country through the Campus Diversity Initiative. And we will continue to welcome young people from all over the world, for open discussion, and mutual learning. Our work should reach out of narrow confines to the wider world. This newsletter will be launched at the season of Dussehra, a celebration of growth, the bounty of harvests and affirmation of life. At this time we invite you to join us in our quest for learning to understand and living to grow.

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS

Beyond the Margins through this issue made an attempt to focus on the activities of ERC in the field of diversity and multicultural education. But, this endeavor can be enriched only with the active support and participation of all the stakeholders. Therefore, Beyond The Margins looks forward to your valuable contributions for publication in the subsequent issues. Students, teachers, and educational administrators may write their everyday experiences about various aspects of diversity and multicultural learning on their campus. Beyond The Margins also calls upon the academics, policy makers, and educationists to share their thoughts, ideas, and experiences to a wider network of concerned citizens.
