The new year has brought with it good tidings for the CDI family
!!.
St. Lawrence University, has offered Mrs. Sharada
Nayak an honorary degree -- Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa -- in
recognition of her exceptional contributions and achievements in the area
of intercultural understanding . Mrs. Nayak will be travelling to the USA
in May next, to receive the degree at the Commencement Ceremony scheduled
on May 18, 2003 at the University in Canton, New York.
We wish her all the best and pray for her good health and continued success
in her mission to promote understanding and appreciation of diverse peoples
and cultures.

EVENTS
A Student Workshop sponsored by FES on Strengthening Democracy:
Understanding Conflicts was held at Sardar Patel University, Vallabh Vidya
Nagar, from 9 11 December 2003.
A Faculty Development Programme was conducted at ECC, Bangalore from
January 03-07, 2003 in which the participants were 25 teachers
from colleges across India.
Sixteen students selected from the four regional workshops on Women in
the Political Process sponsored by FES, held last year, attended a
follow-up workshop in New Delhi from February 16 18, 2003.
Utkal University proposes to hold a Self-Development Program for
educational personnel in the government organisations, from April 13
16, 2003 at Bhubaneshwar.
A student workshop, sponsored by FES on Constitution, State Policy and
Politics: A tribunal Perspective is planned for April 2003 in Ranchi.
VISITS
Dr. Srilekha Majumdar visited Seethalakshmi Ramaswamy College,
Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu in October 2002 to attend the Valedictory
Celebrations for CDI on its completion of Phase II.
Mrs. Sharada Nayak visited Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University, Pune in
January 2003.
A three week study tour entitled Women's Voices was conducted by Mrs.
Nayak, in October 2002. There were thirteen participants from the US on a
programme co-sponsored by Lisle, a non-profit organisation from the U.S. The
group met with women activists and professionals and visited NGO's engaged
in women's development projects.
With the difficult international situation, only one American student
group came to India last year. ERC organised the orientation programme once
more for a group of undergraduate students sponsored by the
