The CDI Camp:
A Golden Moment in My Life
Bhushan Nikam,
Rashtriya Arts, Science and Commerce College,
Chalisgaon, Maharashtra I am very glad and
eager to write about the golden moments that I spent at the Campus Diversity
Initiative's students' camp at ECC, Bangalore. Initially a lot of questions
had risen in my mind: What does a camp mean? What is its aim? What are its
benefits? What does one do in a camp?
Bangalore was an unknown place for me. It was the first
time that I was among strangers, who would later become my best friends. The
first problem I faced was that of language. But in the camp, to my delight I
found that I could effortlessly adjust to my surroundings and communicate
with all the participants.
We had to wake up every morning at 6 a.m. for
yogasana and meditation sessions. With every breath of 'pranayama'
I felt I was breathing in fresh air of life. During the day's sessions I
learnt that if you have to perform a task you have to first plan it
carefully, and then work according to the plan.
For the first time in my life I was exposed to the
culture and folk songs of the different states of India. I used to be afraid
of the stage, but the "role play" sessions helped me a lot to become
confident. I learnt many things and got over my inhibitions. Dr. Udai
Pareek's principle – "Man must be optimistic", Dr. V.K. Arora's personality
development session, Madam Sharada Nayak's talk on "Unity in Diversity", Dr.
Srilekha Majumdar's simulation games and Dr. Devika's "role play" session
were all unforgettable. I gained confidence and we were inspired to bring
out the best in ourselves.
Dinners were memorable events as we had lots of
discussions and debates. I talked to students of different castes,
religions, cultures and languages. It brought out many different emotions in
my heart. I am proud of the unity in diversity of my country India. The
cultural programmes in the evening gave me a golden chance to present my
skills.
Each day in the camp, gave me new insights for my
future career. My friends, from all over India were like my brothers and
sisters. We shared our love and the delicious Kannada dishes.
Before this camp, I was nothing but a common villager,
a common student. Today I have something to do which is so different. Today,
I have become uncommon. This thought fills me with joy and courage.
I thank Rashtriya College Challisgaon and the Educational Resources Centre
for giving me these golden moments of my life!
